        As of 2009, 4.138 billion tons of lignite reserves are found in Turkey (TKI Coal Industry Report, 2009). Within these new reserves, a total of coal resources have reached to 12.3 billion tons. 46 % of these discovered reserves are located in Afşin-Elbistan districts in Kahramanmaraş and are being used to produce electricity in Afşin-Elbistan Thermal Power Plant.

Renewable Energy

            Resources Due to the fact that fossil fuels such as coal and oils are running out the renewable energy resources are becoming increasingly important. Our region (TR63 NUTS 2 Level) has several resources as regard renewable energies especially sun & wind.

Wind energy is another renewable energy source in our region. Even there are 6.204 MW production power capacities, 4.07 % of this capacity are used owing to lack of enough investment. Kahramanmaraş has one third of this power production capacity.
